In Richard Linklater’s homage to 1973 classic “The Last Detail” three veterans of the Vietnam War have to deal with the tragic fallout of the 2003 Iraq conflict. When Larry’s son is killed on a tour of duty in Baghdad he decides against a military funeral and opts to have the coffin taken back home for burial. For this sad task he enlists the help of two former comrades from his Vietnam days; Sal, something of a loudmouth and the ever cautious Richard, now a preacher. The three friends bond once more and take pleasure in each other’s company, finding a lot to argue over and, despite the distressing circumstances, to laugh about. The film also raises the thorny question of what, if anything, has changed in US foreign policy between Vietnam and Iraq.
