In 1992 a brutal civil war in newly independent Georgia, between Abkhaz separatists and Georgian nationalists, forced the majority of a small community of ethnic Estonians to flee the country. In a remote village only two Estonians remain – Ivo, an elderly carpenter, and tangerine grower Margus. Margus insists on staying to harvest his crop of tangerines, while Ivo is making the wooden crates to transport them. But this peaceful idyll is soon to become tainted by the war. After a skirmish in which only two fighters survive, Ivo decides to take them in and tend to their injuries. They are on opposing sides and resentful of each other, but, by his example of kindness and pacifism, Ivo tries to convince them of their common humanity. A sensitive plea for reconciliation and tolerance, “Tangerines” deftly succeeds in balancing tragedy, pathos and humour.
