Nadezhda, a conscientious English teacher and translator in a small Bulgarian town, endeavours to instil into her pupils a sense of right and wrong. After a series of petty thefts at school Nadezhda encourages the culprit to own up, seeking to impart a moral lesson. However, when she later learns that her house is on the point of being repossessed by the bank, their financial resources having been squandered by her feckless husband, she finds that she must take drastic action which puts her principles to the test. Faced with an inflexible bureaucracy and institutional corruption and against the background of an unstable financial climate, Nadezhda battles to raise the money to save her home. She epitomizes, as the directors themselves put it, “the quiet rebellion of the little person against the mercantile, soulless and cynical world we live in.”
