Following on from his previous critically acclaimed features “A Separation” and “The Past”, director Farhadi examines, with his customary acuity, loosely within the framework of a thriller, the strained relationship of a married couple and the patriarchal nature of Iranian society. Emad, a teacher, and his stay-at-home wife Rana have to move into a new flat with some urgency. One day Rana lets a man in, mistakenly believing it to be her husband. She is badly beaten by the intruder, but it is unclear whether she was also sexually assaulted, as the traumatised Rana refuses even to speak about the incident, let alone inform the police. An angry Emad sets out on a mission to find the assailant, intent on revenge, but what exactly motivates him? A subtle, beautifully crafted drama that repays close attention.
