For our classic this season we are proud to present one of the truly great films of all time, the only one to have won the top prizes at both the Berlin and Cannes festivals. “The Wages of Fear” is complex and multi-layered; a character-based drama with political overtones, an exciting action movie and nail-biting thriller. Set in a desolate location in an unnamed Latin American country, it tells the story of a disastrous oilfield fire. In desperation the US owners decide upon an unconventional and highly dangerous means to extinguish it – with nitroglycerine! $2,000 danger money is offered to anyone willing to drive the lorries packed with the highly volatile substance the 300 miles to the oilfield, along uneven, unsurfaced roads. Four men accept the money and the near-suicidal challenge… Edge of seat stuff!
