To be trapped in a bleak, uncomfortable compartment on an overnight train between Moscow and Murmansk with a boorish drunk would be anyone’s idea of a waking nightmare! This, however, is the fate that has befallen sweet-natured Laura, a Finnish archaeology student studying in Moscow. Escaping a one-sided relationship to go and view some ancient Arctic rock drawings, she has courageously resolved to make the arduous train journey. Her travelling companion Ljoha has a mining job lined up in Murmansk. The sensitive, academic Laura and the seemingly philistine Ljoha appear to be in for a long, trying journey. However, as the hours pass the atmosphere thaws, the two of them relax and make the effort to get to know each other. What follows is not exactly romance, but it could just be love…

This charming film was the joint winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes 2021.
