Starring: Eddie Marsan, Joanne Froggatt
Eddie Marsan gives a restrained and touching performance as South London council worker John May, whose job it is to trace the next of kin and organise the funerals of those tenants who have died alone. John himself lives alone and for over 20 years has dedicated himself to his work, which he carries out methodically with loving care and attention. When faceless bureaucrats deem John to be surplus to requirements he embarks upon his last case (alcoholic, Billy Stokes) with quiet determination. A poignant examination of loneliness, “Still Life” bears witness to the difference a compassionate individual can make in a society where community values are being steadily eroded.
