In a hermetically sealed world, seemingly exclusively inhabited by female entomologists, the relationship between two of them – Evelyn and Cynthia – is at a critical stage. The women express their love for each other through sado-masochistic role-play, but behind these acts of heightened sensuality lurk tensions; and power shifts within the relationship gradually reveal a yearning for the conventions of domesticity. Apart from being a sensuous cinematic exploration of a decadent universe, “The Duke of Burgundy” is also, by the way, a butterfly.
