In this suspenseful Cold War drama, set in the 1970s, East German Nelly manages to emigrate legally to the West with her young son Alexei. She wants only to start a new life and, after one final harrowing experience at the border crossing, she at last be- lieves that her dream has come true. On arrival in the American sector of West Berlin Nelly and Alexei are housed in a refugee centre until bureaucratic formalities are completed and they find a place of their own. However, this proves to be a laborious and distressing business, particularly as the American authorities seem determined not to take Nelly at face value. Her former boyfriend, presumed dead, may be alive, they suggest, and may be a (double?) agent! Nelly’s euphoria at being in the West soon turns to anxiety as she realises that she can trust no-one.
