California, 1980s. Manicured lawns, immaculate swimming pools, high school, boy next door – many tropes of the classic American movie are present in “White Bird in a Blizzard”. However, the American Dream has begun to turn into something of a nightmare for 17 year old Kat, burgeoning into an attractive and sexually confident young woman. Her boyfriend Phil seems to be losing interest in her and her mother has disappeared. Kat’s embittered mother Eve has already made it abundantly clear that the concept of domestic bliss is alien to her and that she feels nothing but contempt for her husband Brock. Her relationship with Kat swings irrationally from admiration to crazed jealousy. When she disappears, Kat and her friends come to believe that Brock may finally have snapped and killed her – but can the truth be that simple?
