Secrets and lies abound in the mountain village of Vermiglio in remote Trentino in 1944 Italy. The much respected schoolteacher Cesare and his large family are at the hub of the story, in particular his eldest daughter Lucia who falls in love with and then marries deserter Pietro who has taken refuge in the village, disturbing its surface calm. After the war has ended Pietro tells Lucia he must travel back to his native Sicily to renew contact with his family, promising to return soon. Reluctantly the now pregnant Lucia watches him go. Will she ever see him again? Leisurely paced, with a quiet emotional intensity, enhanced by ravishing photography, “Vermiglio” has garnered many awards, including the Grand Jury Prize at the 2024 Venice Film Festival.
