Ángela lives happily with her partner Héctor in rural Spain, where she works as a potter. Ángela is deaf, but has learnt to adapt to the “regular” world with the aid of Hector, who is hearing. Their peaceful and well-established routine is, however, about to be disrupted by the birth of their first child. When the baby is born, family and friends are pleased. However for Ángela and Héctor, establishing a bond between themselves and their daughter is not so straightforward. “Deaf” has been highly praised on the festival circuit for highlighting with a quiet intensity the emotional pressures involved for both parents, particularly through the riveting central performance of Miriam Garlo, herself a deaf actor.
