Claudia Weill’s indie comedy-drama from 1978 gives us a droll and touching insight into the lives of young career women in the Manhattan of that time. Susan is an aspiring photographer sharing an apartment with her best friend Anne, an aspiring writer. When Anne moves out to marry her boyfriend Susan is left feeling lonely and just a little resentful. She keenly misses her friend’s company, but, more urgently, she needs some money! As her “arty” photos are not selling Susan feels obliged to go down the clichéd path of family and bar-mitzvah photography, eased by local rabbi Aaron Gold, who may also nurture inappropriate feelings for her! A witty, warm-hearted exploration of the joys and tribulations of female friendship.
