Ángela lives happily with her partner Hector in rural Spain, where she works as a potter. Their peaceful and well-established routine is, however, about to be disrupted by the birth of their first child. The disruption, though, is considerably greater than that experienced by the average parents-to-be. Ángela is deaf, but has learnt to adapt to the “regular” world with the aid of Hector, who is hearing. When the baby is born, and it is clear that she can hear, family and friends are pleased. However, for Ángela, establishing a bond between herself and her hearing daughter is not straightforward, especially when Hector can be more immediately responsive to the baby’s needs. The film highlights with a quiet intensity the baby’s first year and the emotional tensions involved. “Deaf” has been highly praised on the festival circuit, particularly the riveting central performance of Miriam Garlo.
