Often cited as one of the hidden gems of the French New Wave, “Le combat dans l’île” is a film well worth rediscovering. Under the guise of a love triangle, in itself tense and dramatic, it highlights the political dilemmas of early 60s France, in particular the violence engendered by the Algerian war. The marriage of Clément and Anne is volatile, Clément being insanely jealous and possessive. His violent nature, however, has a political outlet too, as he is a member of a right wing terrorist group and has come with Anne to hole up at his friend Paul’s house on a remote island. Unlike Clément, Paul is sensitive and sympathetic – something that Anne can’t help but notice. Sparks are going to fly…
