The “good one” of the title is 17-year-old Sam, wise beyond her years, enduring a weekend camping trip with her father Chris and his oldest friend Matt. Sensitively navigating her way between the two middle-aged men’s fragile egos, she is always ready to listen and offer sensible advice. The hike continues uneventfully, against the stunning backdrop of the natural world, until a sudden shock moment changes everything for Sam. Unfortunately, when she most needs her father’s support it is unforthcoming. The parent/child bonds are now stretched to the limit and Sam will soon be all too happy to fly the nest. Thoughtful and understated, “Good One” is an absorbing coming-of-age story with, at its heart, an incredibly nuanced performance by the young Lily Collias.
