One of the most famous (or should that be infamous?) ménages à trois in cinema history, “Jules et Jim” has retained its fascination over the decades. Set before and after the First World War, it centres on two friends – Jim, an outgoing Frenchman, and Jules, a shy Austrian, both living the bohemian lives of young dilettantes in Paris. They fall under the spell of the alluring and capricious Catherine and the three of them become inseparable. However, the men never quite get the measure of Catherine, who remains a rather unsettling enigma. Managing to be simultaneously joyful, romantic and dark, this New Wave masterpiece continues to pack a considerable emotional punch.
