When 13-year-old Jake’s grandfather dies his family decides to move into his spacious Brooklyn apartment. The ground floor of the building is, however, rented by single mother Leonor, who runs a dress shop there. Jake’s parents Brian and Kathy discover that Brian’s father has for years not been charging Leonor the going rate for her premises, which is in an upwardly mobile district. Their decision to increase the rent brings them into conflict with Leonor. More importantly it also poses problems for Jake and Leonor’s son Tony, who have become firm friends. A seemingly mismatched pair, Jake artistic and quiet, Tony outgoing and dramatic, they are put under considerable stress by their parents’ dispute. “Little Men” subtly investigates issues such as class, race and gentrification, but above all it is a lovingly observed family drama and tender study of childhood friendship.
